EditorÕs Introductory Note:

Thanks to neighbors who pitched in to help at the big work party in Halcyon Commons on March 10, with the help of Berkeley Project student volunteers. It was a very productive day, and we appreciated the generous food donation from Whole Foods Market and the fresh coffee from Starbucks.

In coming months, HNAÕs focus is on disaster preparedness. Please see item 1 for a great opportunity for an entirely new training being offered by the city here in our own neighborhood.

Yours in community,

—Nancy Carleton, HNA Co-Chair and E-News Editor, halcyon92@gmail.com

1. New CERT Class in Our Neighborhood: Surviving an Active Shooter & Stop the Bleed!

EditorÕs note: TodayÕs active-shooter incident at YouTube shows how close to home such events can strike. HereÕs a chance to find out about your best strategies for survival, as well as to learn or refresh one of the most crucial skills for saving lives in any kind of disaster, including a big earthquake: knowing how to stop life-threatening bleeding. Please support this initiative on the part of HNA CERT with your presence!

Hi Halcyon Neighborhood Community Emergency Response Team members and friends:

As many of you know, Halcyon Neighborhood CERT together with Berkeley Police Department and volunteer trainers from Berkeley CERT are offering a free class: Surviving a Mass Casualty Incident and Helping the Wounded: How to Get through the First 20 Minutes of an Active Shooting.

The class will cover background on how these incidents typically unfold, your best response, and a review of techniques to control life-threatening bleeding.

For more information, please see the Halcyon Neighborhood CERT blog at https://hnacert.wordpress.com/2018/03/08/upcoming-class-surviving-a-mass-casualty-incident-and-helping-the-wounded/

The class is in two parts:

Classroom: Sat., April 21, 9:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. Click to reserve: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/part-1-surviving-an-active-shooter-managing-critical-bleeding-tickets-44190365573

Lab: Sat., May 19, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Click to reserve: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/part-2-surviving-an-active-shooter-managing-critical-bleeding-tickets-44194792815

ThereÕs a great demand for the class, and a number of seats have been filled by CERT leaders from other Berkeley neighborhoods and well as Berkeley city employees, and thereÕs a waiting list to get in.

However, we have seats set aside for Halcyon residents. If youÕre interested, I encourage you to sign up now. Fairly soon we'll have to release those Halcyon seats to people on the waiting list.

If you have any questions, please shoot me a mail at hnacert@gmail.com and IÕll get back to you.

Thanks

Bill

2. Report on Veggie Sushi Class Fundraiser for HNA CERT

EditorÕs note: Prince Street neighbor Mieko Mochizuki Swartz offered an amazing class last month to benefit our HNA CERT group. If you missed it, you really missed something! Maybe if enough neighbors are interested, Mieko can be persuaded to offer the class again. Thank you, Mieko, along with assistants Mandy BehrensBill Swartz, and Klondike, for a wonderful afternoon and a delicious meal! Neighbors, there are some great photos and a write-up about the event by Mieko at the link below:

3. Crime Watch Update

EditorÕs note: Our HNA Facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/HNABerkeley/ often shares breaking crime reports in between E-News editions (your home and email addresses plus phone are required to participate so we can be sure the group is kept safe for neighbors, and we require this information prior to accepting your request to join). Remember, we rely on neighbors to fill in the details of crimes in our neighborhood, so, in addition to filing a police report (which can now be done online through the City of Berkeley website for some kinds of crimes: http://www.ci.berkeley.ca.us/onlinereport/), please email halcyon92@gmail.com to pass the word on to your neighbors, or share it on our Facebook page, so we can all stay aware and vigilant. We donÕt want to engage in profiling, so if you include a description, please make it as detailed as possible and avoid generalities.

Posted March 27 to our Facebook group: ÒApparently random vandalism perpetrated against our innocent car Wednesday night. Both driver side tires were punctured. The tow truck driver told me that he had another call the same morning from a resident on Emerson St. with punctured tires. This car is the replacement for the previous stolen and trashed car from last August. I have no clue concerning what anyone can do about this type of haphazard destruction. I do feel that this is a generally safe area, but safe is a relative concept.Ó

Posted March 5 to our Facebook group: ÒAnother burglary on Wheeler. This happened between Saturday 5:45 p.m. and Sunday 1:30 p.m. Entry through back yard. Some minor electronics and precious jewelry stolen. Police notified. Ransacked mostly bedroom dressers and closets. Last week two gentleman came to my door mid morning dressed in security/police uniforms. They said our alarm had gone off, but our alarm isnÕt currently active (which I unfortunately mentioned). Not sure if thereÕs a connection, but be forewarned. I have reported this information to the police.Ó

Posted March 4 to our Facebook group: ÒStolen Mail: Apologies for long delay in letting you know about this. [Approximately ten days ago] at 4:00 a.m., someone came on our porch, opened one of the mailboxes, and stole the mail. I ran out of house and followed the thief down the street while calling Berkeley police. The thief got into a car at the corner of Fulton and Prince and drove away. BPD dispatcher told me they would not send an officer out, but to report to United Postal Service. Had I not been wasting time on phone, couldÕve taken picture! I have reported this information to the police. Out of caution, we collect our mail as soon as itÕs delivered. Now we also collect the other residentÕs for her. Apparently, many other homes were hit on Prince Street. A kindly occupant of Chochmat HaLev returned our mail to us (they had found piles of discarded mail around the corner).

EditorÕs note: News from Whole Foods Market, courtesy of Store Team Leader Hayden Richards.

Next Drop-in Progress Meeting, Friday, May 11, 2018, 8:15-9:00 a.m.

Whole Foods Market (check in at Customer Service)

These meetings are held at the Community Table at the front of the store or outside, and the purpose is to share our plans for ongoing changes in the store, street litter control, and progress on any of the ongoing issues we discuss with HNA reps and nearby neighbors. The Store Team Leader is usually present, and anyone is welcome to join us. Of course there will be complimentary coffee or tea. Our goal is to follow up immediately on any issues that we hear about, and to hear how the store can be a better neighbor. As always, if there are ever any urgent issues, please call the store at 510-649-1333 and ask for the shift manager on duty. We have new shift leaders being trained, so please send an email to the group below so we can follow up appropriately. Always feel free to swing by too, if youÕd like to have a word with us.
